In
Gods Backyard (Dutch title: In Gods Achtertuin)
Augustinian priest Jan Frank (Groenlo, The Netherlands,
1937) is one of the last five Dutch missionaries in the island of
West Papua, former Dutch New Guinea. From 1967 on, he's worked in
the isolated jungle, visiting Papua villages, christening the inhabitants
and walking from one village to another for days and weeks. Although
he's been stationed in the coastal town of Manokwari for a long
time to do parish work, his heart belongs to the jungle in the inner
regions of the island. He decides to return to the village of Ayawasi
to visit the catholic mission he helped to build years ago. The
trip by plane to the jungle will be his last one. Jan Frank died
in April 2006. The short documentary is an homage to his personality
and lifelong work in Papua.
The
DVD 'In Gods Backyard' (Dutch version) is for sale through the SDSP
Foundation in The Netherlands which initiates
and supports projects in Papua.
